How often do classroom teachers hear the sighs from some students as soon as math is mentioned? It is not uncommon for students to disengage from math instruction and the reasons are many: they just don’t get it, they do not understand the why for their learning, or maybe they are inundated with worksheets. Whatever the case, it is important we change strategies often to engage students and promote their learning of math. This is where technology opens up many possibilities. Today’s episode will focus on technology resources for use in the math classroom - Extensions/Add-ons and Websites, the question feature in Google Classroom, and Google Forms. We know how difficult it can be carving out time to create and develop digital lessons - that is why we are offering three low prep activities in the form of templates that you can copy from our Show Notes page and integrate into your lessons immediately. In today's episode we discuss three templates to get your students practicing their writing skills and composing at the keyboard. Let's Talk Partner Talk/Write Hook the Reader When students choose how they show mastery of a standard or even choose how they direct their learning, the level of engagement and interest soars! A carefully crafted learning experience ensures that no matter what decision students make, they will encounter rich content and interact with it at a greater depth of knowledge. In this episode, we talk about three ways to package student learning experiences with Learning Menus, Choice boards, and Hyperdocs. There are so many reasons to shift to a learning environment that provides students with the opportunity for greater choice. John Spencer, author of Launch, blogged about 7 Things that Happen when Students Own their Learning. The number one reason? Bring back the Love of Learning! Every student has a voice and now with the help of technology, all students have the chance to be heard. By providing opportunities for students to have a voice in how they will learn and how they will show what they have learned, students' voices will be amplified and their learning will take on a whole new meaning. In episode 3, we discuss three tools educators and students can integrate into learning to amplify student voice, Flipgrid, Screencastify, and Anchor.
Just as it is key for detectives to collect evidence to solve a crime, teachers must also collect evidence of learning in order to provide effective instruction. This evidence of learning can certainly be a final grade however, how do we know along the way that students are progressing toward the learning goal? Luckily, technology can be a tremendous help with collecting evidence of active learning while at the same time keeping students accountable for their work. Our focus will be on using Google Docs for Brainstorming, Picture Prompts, and Reader's Response |
